Arreal Griffin Colliery, photograph
The Sinking of Arreal Griffin Colliery, Six Bells, Abertillery, about 1896). Group of sinkers around a shaft and some in sinking bucket. These two shafts were sunk between 1892 and 1896. The photographer shows the sinkers grouped around one of the shafts. The sinking bucket or "bowk" was used to wind both the men and the stone from the sinking. The sinkers are wearing the protective clothing and sinkers helmets with the elongated brim covering the back of the neck.
