S.S. FEDERICO, glass negative

Hansen, Leslie W.

¾ Port bow view of S.S. FEDERICO entering Cardiff Docks, c.1936. Shows the vessel with the Italian flag painted on the hull. This was done as a result of the Spanish civil war in the 1930s. The vessel often passed the Straits of Gibraltar and the painted Italian flag showes her clearly as an Italian ship.

S.S. FEDERICO (1488 Grt.). Built 1920 by Bremer Vulkan, Vegesack (Germany) as Emmapark for N.V Scheepvaart- & Transport Maatschappij 'Atlantica'(Halcyon Lijn mgrs.), Rotterdam. In 1926 she switched homeport to Amsterdam when she was sold to the Koninklijke Nederlandsche Stoomboot Maatschappij as Ilos. In 1931, she was sold G. Costa fu Andrea (the present owners of largec ruise vessels), of Genove (Genua) and was renamed Federico. On 28 July 1941 she was torpedoed and sunk by the British submarine HMS Utmost, 8 miles off Capo Bonifati, whilst en route fron Naples to Messina.
