Ewer

Cooper, Robert

Ewer, silver gilt, tapering cylindrical body, with harp handle and short spout chased with fluting, below which is a coat of arms engraved with the arms of Sir John Trevor (1638-1717) of Brynkinallt, Denbighshire and his wife Jane Mostyn, in a cartouche of scrollwork and ribbon- tied laurel festoons. The lower part of the body is decorated with a cut cardwork kaliyx of acanthus foliage and beading, on short stem with gadrooned knop and circular domed and gadrooned foot.

This magnificent dish and ewer were made for Sir John Trevor (about 1637-1717) of Brynkinalt, Denbighshire and his wife, Jane Mostyn. In 1693 Trevor was at the peak of a highly successful career. A Welsh lawyer, he ingratiated himself at the court of Charles II and was an MP from 1673. In 1685 he was elected Speaker and was made Master of the Rolls. However, he was deposed for corruption in 1695.
