Raised work (stumpwork) picture of The Judgement of Paris, about 1620-40. Originally mounted and hung from silk ribbon and later hung in a 17th century marquetry frame. Ground fabric of cream silk satin, lined with another layer of tabby weave silk. The five main figures of Paris, Helen, Athene, Hera and an unidentified male are well padded, along with several of the background motifs (a castle, orange tree, oak tree, acorns, an angel and a parrot). There are also other motifs in shallower relief (bird, stag, peacock, a large fish etc) and others worked in flat stitches and moss stitch.
