Obverse. The king (facing front) on horse-back to sinister, in coat of mail with conical helmet, spurred; in his right hand a long lance with three streamers; in his left hand, held by a strap, a lengthened and hollowed kite-shaped shield (protected within which a warrior could sleep); simple horse-trappings: small, plain saddle and stirrup, breast-band, girth and head-gear. Heslop describes this as ‘the earliest genuine equestrian seal in existence’.
