Badge

Royal British Legion Pride poppy badge. This badge design was first released ahead of Remembrance Day in November 2024. In presentation card packing with background information to the badge.

Part of wording inside card packing - “This badge symbolises support for our LGBTIQ+ community who are a vital part of our Armed Forces past and present. By wearing this badge, you are showing your solidarity with those who have faced discrimination or marginalisation due to their sexual orientation or gender identity, particularly those who served under the Ban, when it was illegal to be gay, lesbian, or bisexual in the Armed Forces”.

Up until 2000, it was illegal to be gay or bisexual in the British Armed Forces. Personnel who served their country experienced a culture of homophobia, including bullying, blackmail, conversion therapy, intrusive medical examinations and sexual assault.

In 2022, the Government commissioned an independent review to better understand the impacts of the LGBT military ban. The Independent Review was published on 19 July 2023, and the Government published its formal response on 13 December 2023. The 2023 review made 49 recommendations, including financial and non-financial restorative measures.
