Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales
From an imperial building inscription, together with fragments 89.199H/2 and 89.199H/3, recording the name of Emperor Aurelian on the first line, probably in the nominative, with the word for the building constructed or rebuilt on the second. The inscription originally consisted of two or more sandstone slabs, both sides of which had been smoothly dressed. The fragment had been reused in fourth-century paving.
Site Name: Roman Gates Site, Caerleon
Notes: Four fragments of an Imperial building inscription were found in Block A and adjacent contexts. The inscription originally consisted of two or more sandstone slabs 40mm thick, both sides of which had been smoothly dressed. Of these fragments two join and come from the left hand edge of one of the slabs. The letters themselves are large, being some 130mm high, somewhat crudely cut, with exaggerated horizontal serifs and a 'U'- shaped sulcus (section).
