Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales
This small, abstract sculpture is made from forged and welded iron. The artist, Reg Butler, had previously worked as an assistant to Henry Moore, a sculptor well-known for his simple, smooth and shapely figures. In contrast, the spiky, linear form of Butler's Crouching Woman is very different from Moore’s full-bodied women. She has a thin, awkward, insect-like body and crouches on her three legs as though about to pounce. The shapes made by her body are at once uncomfortable, strange and menacing.
