Belt
Snake 'Jeans' belt worn by Carl Minett of Aberfan. Carl was seven years old when he was killed in his classroom in Pantglas Junior School Aberfan on 21 October 1966. His ten-year-old sister, Marylyn, was also killed.
At 9.13 that Friday morning thousands of tonnes of black coal waste from an unstable tip slid down the mountain. It instantly engulfed Pantglas Junior School and parts of the village killing a total of 116 children and 28 adults.
Blue elasticated narrow fabric belt with white metal fastening. The fabric is synthetic with elements of elastic; lettering spelling out 'JEANS' six times across the length of the belt (in white capital letters on blue ground). Upper and lower edges of belt are white. PL side has a white metal slider for adjusting the length. The fabric is folded around the metal fastenings on either side and held in place with machine stitches. Fastenings form a loop on both sides to which an S/Snake shaped hook can be attached. The S-shape is bent shut at the PR side so that it cannot fall off and remains permanently attached to the loop. The front face of the 'S' hook is textured to resemble a snake.
