Puzzle jug

Dillwyn & Co., Cambrian Pottery (1811 - 1817 and 1824 - 1850)

Jug, earthenware, octagonal squared-off foot-rim, pouch-shaped octagonal body, incised lines between the eight sides of the body, vertical neck with three lion-headed nozzles protruding at its base, a narrow horizontal shelf to the interior base of the neck, wavy lip-rim, wide curved spout, perforated holes to the neck and spout, high loop scrolling handle with raised thumb-spur, a further spur lower down and another spur to the lower terminal, foliate moulding to the handle, a raised ridge on the body of the jug inside the handle; transfer-printed in blue with the 'Oriental Basket' pattern, a tall-stemmed bowl containing flowers in the foreground with exotic birds to either side of it, in the background a pseudo-oriental landscape with Oriental shipping and Oriental buildings, a border of flowers and foliage around the bottom portion of the scene, the two identical scenes on either side of the jug are mirror images of each other, a wide border of flowers and foliage to the neck, a border of diamond shapes and circles to the handle.
