Obverse of the First Seal of Edward I.
The obverse of this seal is almost exactly the same as that of the Second Seal of Henry III with minor differences: a more pronounced cross moline (almost paty) surmounts the orb, the seat of the throne is slightly broader, the ornamentation of the shallow foot-rest takes the form of two large quatrefoils above which a layer of narrow arcading. As on Henry’s seal, the king wears an open crown of three points flory; in his right hand is held a long sceptre topped by a dove, in his left hand an orb surmounted by a tall cross (perhaps) paty. Under the king’s feet, two small lions couchant guardant and, at each side of the throne a small lion leaping up towards the monarch. Before the initial cross of the legend is a leaf, or possibly a hand of blessig, which does not appear on Henry’s seal, nor does the top of the sceptre penetrate the legend
