Chepstow Castle
William Fitzosbern founded the castle for William the Conqueror to control the mouth of the river Wye, a key crossing from England and Wales. One of the first stone castles, Chepstow was repeatedly enlarged until the Civil War. Richards was a founder member of the Royal Academy, where he showed a picture of this subject in 1776. He was also a highly successful scene painter at Covent Garden, as may be sensed from this theatrical composition.
