Crown patent fuel works, Cardiff, photograph
View showing John Bovell in overalls and safety helmet. John Bovell was foreman of the briquetting operation at Crown patent fuel works, Cardiff. The Crown fuel works was located in Cardiff Docks, and operated by the Coal Products Division of the N.C.B. The plant used a fluidised sand bed to 'cook' coal briquettes to render them smokeless.
