GILMAN, Harold (1876 - 1919)
Gilman was born in Somerset and studied at the Slade School of Art. He was associated with Sickert in the Fitzroy Street and Camden Town Groups. This interior probably depicts the house in Letchworth, a new town in Hertfordshire where Gilman and his wife Grace lived in 1908-09. This composition, with pictures on either side of the door cropped by the edges and the backturned figure silhouetted against the window, has been carefully arranged to give the impression of a fleeting glimpse.
