Untitled (XIV)
Untitled XIV is a large painting composed of tiny close-toned marks applied across an underlying grid. As we stand back from the painting, the formality of the grid dissolves and we experience the coloured marks as indeterminate rhythms playing across the painted surface. James Hugonin’s studio is in the Cheviot Hills in Northumberland and the movement and colour in his work has been related to light and shadows moving across a vast landscape. Untitled XIV invites us to pause, to slow-down and experience painting in a more mindful way.
