Ledger

Master's disbursement book, Captain Richard James, Feb. 1901 - Aug. 1909. Vessels mentioned are steamships Etonian and Carthusian, owned by John Mathias & Sons, Aberystwyth & Cardiff.

S.S. ETONIAN (3805 gross tons). In 1896 the main activities of the enterprise established by John Mathias were moved to Cardiff where a new firm, the grandly-titled 'Cambrian Steam Navigation Co. Ltd', was established. For some unknown reason, the company later began to name its ships after public school. The first of them was steamer Etonian, built by Grays of West Hartlepool in 1901. Sold to Italian owners in 1913 and renamed PIETRO, she was torpedoed on 23 December 1917. Ym 1896, symudwyd y rhan fwyaf o weithgareddau cwmni John Mathias i Gaerdydd, lle sefydlwyd cwmni newydd, sef y 'Cambrian Steam Navigation Co. Ltd.' Dechreuwyd ar arfer a enwi llongau ar ôl ysgolion bonedd, a'r dyma'r cyntaf ohonynt, sef yr Etonian, a adeiladwyd gan William Gray, West Hartlepool, ym 1901. Gwerthwyd hi i Eidalwyr ym 1913 ac fe'i suddwyd gan dorpido ar 23 Rhagfyr 1917.
