The picturesque ruins of Llanthony Priory in the Black Mountains are shown here from a dramatically low viewpoint, exaggerating the size of the buildings. Hodges studied painting under Richard Wilson and was the official artist on Captain Cook's second voyage to the South Pacific in 1772-5.
