Robe (mantle) of a Knight of the Star of India. Worn by Sir John Arthur Herbert as a Knight Grand Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire, 1939. In the same year, he was appointed as the Governor of Bengal under the British Raj.
Dark blue silk satin, lined with white silk. Two white silk ribbon bows on shoulders. Large breast star emblem affixed to left side, with the motto 'IMPERATRICIS AUSPICIIS' (Under the Auspices of the Empress). Made by W. Northam, 9 Henrietta St, Covent Garden, London. Maker's name and address on woven label inside robe. Worn with tassel (52.501.45).
