Christ's dead body is hauled from the cross, tormented and stripped of dignity. His mother reaches out to him in anguish while Mary Magdalene clings to his feet. This oil sketch has the intense emotion and vigorous movement typical of Baroque painting. Born in 's-Hertogenbosch, Diepenbeck moved to Antwerp in around 1623. Diepenbeck was heavily influenced by his master Rubens, and often used his motifs in his work. Here he has painted in 'grisaille', a popular monochromatic style usually used to simulate sculpture.
