Banner

Dark green cotton velvet banner with appliqued decoration on front. Inscribed: WOMEN FOR LIFE ON EARTH. From the collection of Thalia Campbell, a member of the Women for Life on Earth group who established the peace camp at Greenham Common in September 1981.

"That one was made by people from Llandrindod Wells, hot after Greenham – soon after Greenham. And they used to stand in the street and sing peace songs with this as a backdrop. Women in Llandrindod Wells". Source: Oral history interview with Thalia Campbell conducted by Elen Phillips (19 December 2017).

The lettering is arranged over a background featuring a yellow tree with falling leaves of lavender coloured fabric. At either side of the tree is a female gender symbol. The one on the proper left also has a peace symbol inscribed within the circle. The symbols as well as the lettering are cut from pink patterned fabric of undyed cotton wefts and pink synthetic warps. The warp-faced weave of the yellow fabric of the tree is made with wefts of different thicknesses and thin yellow warps, resulting in a horizontal rib-effect. The leaves are made from a synthetic fabric that has a knitted construction. Pole sleeves made of black tabby woven fabric have been stitched to the reverse of the side edges. The velvet ground fabric has selvages along both upper and lower edges. All appliquéed pieces have been stitched on using machine made zigzag stitches using yellow, green, pink and purple thread. Ties of yellow, black and blue ribbon have been attached to the upper proper right, middle and proper left, respecitively. Brown ribbon ties have been stitched to lower two corners: here, they have been stitched on as a loop rather than two separate ties. The back of the banner is lined with pink synthetic fabric which is stitched around upper edge and sides, but left loose along the bottom.
