Born in 1879 at Ynysywen Farm, Llantwit Faerdre, to John and Jane Morgan. She trained as a Pupil Teacher under the Board School elementary schools system during the 1890s, probably at Hawthorn Road Board School in Llandaff North, Cardiff. In 1903, she married John Howells, who worked for the Taff Vale Railway in their Cardiff office. They had two children - Margaret Jane (born 1904) and Iorwerth (born 1907). Jane died of pneumonia in 1911 at the age of 32.
