Bonnet

Blue silk bonnet worn by a Red Cross nurse at the Baglan Hall Red Cross Hospital. The hospital opened on 30 July 1915.

Blue silk bonnet with metal and enamel badge. Base made from dyed-blue straw plaits that have been arranged in a spiral and stitched together into the shape of the bonnet. The edges are encapsulated with a blue velvet trim. The bonnet is covered with a veil made from a single piece of dark blue silk crepe fabric (73 x 75cm), folded over irregularly and draped over the back in two layers and stitched around the upper edge of the bonnet. Adjacent to the velvet trim; it has a deep double turnback hem on all four sides. The inside lining is of blue silk and is constructed of two pieces: a circular section at the centre, and a long piece along the sides which is gathered into the circle at the centre. Manufacturer's details are printed in gold onto the circular piece of the lining. Copper alloy badge bearing the red and white enameled shield of the red cross; wording on a circle surrounding the shield and on a ribbon below. Badge is stitched to upper centre front of bonnet. Stitches extend into lining on inside of bonnet.
