Roman stone inscription (Trajan)

With ansate sides. Original upper right corner missing; restored with a plaster reconstruction

Dedication to the Emperor Trajan

This inscription, erected in AD 100, may have adorned the south-west gate. The slab of Luna marble was sent from Italy, probably with its text ready-cut, but by the time it was set up the consular numeral required changing from II to III.

Imp(eratori) Caes(ari) divi [Nervae f (ilio) ] Nervae Traia[no Aug(usto)] Ger(manico) pontif(ici) maximo [trib(unicia)] potest(ate) p(atri) p(atriae) co(n)s(uli) III Leg(io) II Aug(usta)

β€˜To the Emperor Caesar Nerva Trajan Augustus, conqueror of Germany, son of the deified Nerva, high priest, with tribunician power, father of his country, consul for the third time, the Second Augustan Legion (dedicates this)’
