Cribbage board

Home-made cribbage board made by Edmund J. Salter, of Barry, from timbers of S.S. VERA JEAN, wrecked near Rhoose, 1908. Inscribed on reverse “Vera Jean, Nov 27, 1908”. Following stranding S.S. VEAR JEAN (outward bound from Cardiff for Chile with a cargo of patent fuel) at Fontigary Beach near Rhoose, the crew came ashore in the ship’s boats at Rhoose, one of the boats being wrecked. This well-known stranding was extensively reported in local newspapers and gave rise to a notable court case concerning the responsibilities of tug masters. Local photography entrepreneurs photographed the vessel (which was stranded for 12 days) and produced postcards. E.J. Salter named his daughter, born shortly afterwards, Vera Jean.
