Suit jacket

Century Clothes

Stone coloured suit jacket worn by Gerald Fitz Walker (1930-96) who emigrated from Jamaica to Port Talbot in the 1960s. Born in St Mary, Jamaica, he married Ivy May Leslie (also of Jamaica) in 1967. They lived in Enfield Street, Port Talbot, where they raised eight children.

Single-breasted suit jacket of stone coloured wool with 2-button fastening (only the lower button [brown plastic] remaining). The fabric of the jacket is of a fine 2/1 twill weave of grey wefts (2-ply, S-twist, 24/cm) and warps made of lengths of brown and beige plied togethe (2-ply, S-twist, 35/cm). There is a supplementary pattern of a fine check achieved by pairs of additional warps and wefts, resulting in c.3.2cm wide squares. In the centre of each square is a set of three warps made of knop yarn, which has an additional component of blue fibres, which are bunched up at c.10.5cm intervals resulting in small specks of blue across the fabric.

The jacket has welt pockets at either hip (of which the proper right one has an additional, smaller, interior pocket), a slash pocket on left chest and inner welt pocket on right chest. Pale lavender lining with woven diamond pattern. Collar is lined with a brown tabby woven fabric which has a raised nap. Two vertical darts above hip pockets to shape the garment.
