Plate, buff coloured earthenware, circular shape with small inset base, curving sides and spreading rim; covered all over with a blue tinged tin-glaze, the upperside of the plate painted in blue with to the centre of the well a male figure clad in eighteenth century costume and seated in a chair, smoking a long-stemmed pipe, a Chinese-style border to the rim of foliate motifs on a deep blue ground issuing narrow scrolling lines which spread down the sides of the well, a brown edge to the rim, the underside of the plate decorated with blue dashes and circles.
