Woman with a veil on Fifth Avenue New York City
Diane Arbus is best known for her portraits of people on the margins of society, having once stated that ‘there are things nobody would see if I didn’t photograph them.’ Arbus often befriended her subjects, prompting them to become willing collaborators in the portrait-making process. The resulting photographs explore the complex relationship between appearance, identity and representation. These photographs were produced by the Arts Council Collection. In the days before digital photography, reproductions of original photographs were distributed to magazines and newspapers to promote exhibitions.
