John Elias (1774-1841)
ROOS, William (1808-1878)
John Elias was a Calvinist Methodist minister and a popular and powerful preacher. An inscription by the artist on the back of the painting describes him as "the most eloquent dramatic preacher Wales ever produced". He was well known for the strength and inflexibility of his convictions and his uncompromising approach caused opponents to dub him the "Pope of Anglesey".
