Patchwork quilt

Vaughan, Kathryn (Quilter)

Quilted patchwork bedcover, handstitched by Kathryn Vaughan of Penarth, between 1993-2016. Made from a range of printed cottons. Embroidered inscription on the back: HANDMADE BY KATHRYN VAUGHAN / 1993-2016 / TWENTY + YEARS WORK!!

Large patchwork quilt made from 30 patchwork squares (6 rows of 5) set against a dark blue background with detailing in a fabric of small red/black check. Each square has its own design and pattern, though fabrics of the same print have been used across several squares. Altogether there are 24 differently printed cottons used on the quilt, including the lining. Most of the squares feature traditional quilting patterns but some are figurative: there is a flower, a sail boat and a house. The panel depicting the house has a dark blue plastic button added as a door knob as well as a cat-shaped wooden button sitting in front of the house.

Blue plastic buttons have been stitched to the border at c.17cm intervals, c.8.5cm in from the edge. In total, there are 56 buttons on the front. Smaller, matching blue buttons has been stitched to the back of each of those buttons on the reverse.

The plain backing is constructed of two lengths of ceam and blue check fabric (joined by a vertical seam). Each length is c. 116cm wide.

All edges are encapsulated with cotton that has a small check print in red and black.

Everything on the quilt appears to be hand-stitched, including the vertical seam joining the two sections of the backing fabric and the edging.

Chalk marks mapping out the design for the quilting stitches remain on some areas (especially noticeable on dark blue side edges). All quilting stitches are worked in blue thread.
