Professor T. Gwynn Jones

WALTERS, Evan (1893-1951)

T. Gwynn Jones (1871-1949) was a hugely productive and influential scholar and academic in Welsh literature: he was a prolific poet, journalist, novelist, essayist, literary judge, biographer and translator. During his career, he published hundreds, if not thousands of different works, however he is primarily remembered for his poetic work. His awdl that won him his first bardic chair, ‘Ymadawiad Arthur’ (1902) is a milestone in the history of Welsh poetry, and his volume Detholiad o Ganiadau (1926) is considered as one of the most important volumes of Welsh poetry of the twentieth century. He was also ahead of his time in experimenting with forms of poetry, and developed the vers libre gynganeddol, which can be seen in his last volume, Y Dwymyn (1944).

This description was written by Dr Elen Ifan, Lecturer at the School of Welsh, Cardiff University.
