Banner

Tutill, George (Manufacturer)

Large double-sided green and cherry red silk painted banner, with carrying poles and tassels. Manufactured by George Tutill of 83 City Road, London for the Ancient Order of Foresters (St Fagans Branch). Used in the early 1900s.

Constructed from a central piece of green silk with a red silk border down each side and along the bottom, it is sewn using a combination of hand and machine stitch. The banner features a roundel on each side with a painted scene, using bright coloured and metallic paints of an unknown type. The front side bears a tableau of a sick man on his death bed within an empirical scene, below a scroll with the text COURT BENEVOLENT LADY CLIVE No 2440 A.O.F. ST. FAGANS, with decorative vines and scrolls in each corner. The reverse features a grieving widow and child kneeling at a grave stone. The scroll above reads WE SUPPORT THE WIDOW AND ORPHANS.
