Dear Margaret,

I will double-check with our curators, but as far as I am aware, there are no names recorded with this painting.

Thank you for your enquiry,

really emotionally captivating
saw this on my family visit to Cardiff, were learning about ww1 in school. God bless those who lost their lives in the war, bloodshed never wins anything.

Hello -

I am writing about the art of WWI and would like to reproduce this image in it. The name of the book is "Painting America's Portrait - How Illustrators Created America" and you can find information about it at www.comonwealthbooks.org. Can you advise me on how to acquire a hi-res image of the painting and permission to reproduce it in my book.

Thank you,

James C. Thompson

John Brian Jones and others, please get in touch as I am seeking stories and photographs of the men who fought at Mametz Wood for my next book on the Welsh at Passchendaele, due out in 2017. My website is www.jonathanhicks.co.uk.
I would very much like to hear more about your relatives.

The Mametz memorial is a great tribute to the men that took part in the battle. My mothers cousin Bethuel Harcombe, a Trealaw Rhondda boy, died there His name is on the Thiepval memorial. He like others enlisted under age. The memory lives on with me and my family

My great uncle Enoch Davies was killed at Mametz Wood 10/7/1916. He was 21 and a miner (underground) living in Pontlottyn. As a child I remember my Nain always spoke of him, though being a child I could never have appreciated the deep pain she must have felt at his loss until the end of her days. He had been a soldier for 7 months.

Last week we visited the grave in Rouen Extension Cemetery of relation Charles Rees Lewis of Pontlottyn. He was a member of the 13 Btn Welch Regt ,aged 20 and was badly wounded at Mametz Wood .Taken to the military hospital in Rouen where he died a few days later. Near his grave are others of the Welch and the Fusiliers who suffered the same fate. If you visit the battle site you will realise immediately what a difficult task they had.
