Truncheon
The painting and decorating of a truncheon was more than just ornamentation - by having a royal crown or coat of arms, it showed that the constable was acting with the authority of the Crown
Wooden truncheon with transfer print decoration. Royal cypher GR and crown at top. Shield below bearing crest (St. Tydfil on blue ground) and motto of Merthyr Tydfil: NID CADARN OND BRODYR DDE with inscription below: SPECIAL CONSTABLE DURING THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 MERTHYR TYDFIL. Turned at one end to form handgrip .With leather carrying strap (broken) attached between handgrip and turned butt.
