Refreshment by the way
The theme of the travelling soldier or vagabond asking for refreshment at a wayside has been adopted from seventeenth-century north-European art and the period of the Thirty Years War. Historic genre scenes like this were a popular alternative to images of modern life, considered by some more sophisticated and decorative.
