Roman copper alloy bell

This is a cast copper alloy bell with sub-rectangular cross-sectioned mouth, tapering towards a domed top. The suspension loop is sub-square and angular in outline, whilst the loop-hole is circular. The clapper does not survive inside the bell. The mouth is widest at right angles to the axis of the suspension loop at 41.6mm, compared with 36.3mm parallel with the suspension loop axis. In places, the original mouth edge has survived, although in others it has broken or eroded away. Striations, probably file marks, are visible at the base of the suspension loop and on surviving outer bell wall surfaces. At one point, there is a hole in the bell wall about 1.5mm in diameter, possibly a casting imperfection. Large areas of the bell wall are erosion pitted and the bell has a dark green patina.

Bronze harness bell, 40-80 CE.
