Universal milling machine

Toolroom Universal Milling Machine No. 11, made by the Brainard Milling Mc. Co., Boston, and Hyde Park, Mass., U.S.A. Patented - Jan 17 1871, Jan 31 1871, Oct 1 1872, Mar 8 1883, Aug 9 1887, Apr 24 1888 .
Flat belt driving a four step pulley attached to the headstock spindle. Has 'back gearing' for extra slow speed. Power feed was driven via a flat belt, from a four step pulley at the rear end of the headstock spindle. It has been fitted with a fairly modern aluminium and perspex cutter guard, it also has a sheet metal guard for the feed pulleys and one of weld mesh for the feed drive shaft, both of which are later additions. Paintwork is not original. Colour - 'Hammerite' silver/grey ,(was green) with red and black. Body of m/c incorporates a lockable tool / parts cupboard. There is a modern fabricated steel tubular item bolted to front bearing pedestal - a damper perhaps?
