Destierro (Displacement)
Destierro (Displacement) is a relic of a performance that originally took place in Havana, Cuba in 1998. When the suit or masquerade is displayed, the film of the original performance is projected behind the figure. The suit is Bruguera’s interpretation of a Nkisi Nkonde – a wooden ‘fetish figure’ from central Africa. Traditionally a Nkisi Nkonde would be the home of a spirit with fearsome powers which would offer protection and regulate disputes within a community. Bruguera’s performance had multiple layers of meaning when performed in Cuba, a country with a vibrant creolization or mixing of African and European cultures and beliefs.
