Hotel de Marl (Between Ferry Road and the River Taff), Cardiff, 1893.

The Hotel de Marl was a scheme devised by local men in Grangetown, Cardiff to evade the 1881 Sunday Closing Act. Here a man has brought a kilderkin (a small barrel) of beer to be shared by the drinking men, hence the caption on the photo, 'The Barman Returns'. This photograph was taken on Sunday 28 May 1893.
