The Dillwyn family (later Dillwyn Llewelyn) owned the Penllergare Estate from the 18th century onwards. John Dillwyn Llewelyn, one of the pioneers of photography, lived and photographed here. He was related to Thomas Mansel Franklen (the photographer of this image) through his marriage to Mansel Franklen's aunt, Emma Thomasina Talbot.
