During the first half of the 20th Century it became popular for communities across the UK to stage theatrical re-enactments of events from local and national history. In 1922, an ambitious pageant was staged at Harlech Castle in which local people performed scenes from Welsh history. The annual carnival was also a focal point for many local communities. Elaborate costumes were created for participants to wear in processions through villages and towns.
