Roman-letter inscribed stone, Egremont (St Michael's Church)

This 6th century inscription to Carantacus has had a cross added to it at a later date (probably 7th-9th century). First recorded in c. 1745 standing in the churchyard. By 1889 it had been incorporated into a niche in the exterior west wall of the nave, perhaps when the church was rebuilt in 1839. The photograph shows the stone in this position. It is now inside the church.
