In October 1913, a severe thunderstorm produced a series of tornadoes across the south west of Britain, one of which touched down in the south Wales valleys. The track of the tornado was 11 miles. Three people were killed and damage to property was estimated at £40,000, equivalent to around £2.5 million today. The storm crossed the Bristol Channel, making landfall close to Esail Isaf and Llantwit Fadre. It then travelled northwards, causing extensive damage in Cilfynydd, Abercynon and Edwardsville.
