This statue was made for the National Coal Board for the Industrial Wales Exhibition at Olympia 1947. The miner was modelled on Thomas Idris Lewis of Seven Sisters, Neath.
The version of the ‘Ideal Miner’ held by Amgueddfa Cymru is mainly made of fibreglass, and was one of a number of identical sculptures made for the Industrial Wales Exhibition held at Olympia in 1947. It is currently on display at Big Pit: National Mining Museum. I have checked our records, and asked around, but we unfortunately do not know if an original sculptors maquette exists.
