Statement from Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales in response to the Welsh Government’s announcement of additional funding

Today (3 February 2021), the Welsh Government announced a £3.95m package for Amgueddfa Cymru to safeguard jobs and deliver new strategic priorities, providing stability for Wales’ flagship national cultural institution during these difficult times.

In recent discussions with the Welsh Government, we and our recognised Trade Unions emphasised our precarious financial position after more than a decade of austerity and the challenges of COVID-19.

The £3.95m will help protect jobs and services, ensuring we can continue to work in partnership with organisations and communities across Wales. It also ensures that we can play a key role in supporting the healing and rebuilding of the nation from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We are creating a new model for museums. The Amgueddfa Cymru of the future will comprise of three strong elements: the seven physical national museums and Collections Centre that are part of the Amgueddfa Cymru family; our work with communities across Wales; and the digital resources that serve the nation. All three will be essential for the success of a strong national museum for Wales.
