Treasure found in Powys and South Wales

7 February 2023

Six treasure finds, including a Roman silver coin hoard, medieval silver brooches and a gold finger ring, were declared treasure on Tuesday 7th February 2023 by Patricia Morgan, Coroner for South Wales Central. 

Treasure found in South-East Wales

Five treasure finds, including two decorative gold finger-rings of medieval date, were declared treasure on Wednesday 25th January 2023 by Sarah Le Fevre, Assistant Coroner for Gwent. 

Acting President of Amgueddfa Cymru - Museum Wales

We are pleased to announce that, from 1st January this year, Museum’s Vice President, Dr Carol Bell, has become the Acting President of Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales. This follows Mr Roger Lewis’s decision to stand down from his role at the end of December 2022 in order to undertake a number of other public roles and projects

Welsh Government will shortly run a process to recruit to the new permanent positions of Chair and Vice Chair, with Dr Bell’s term of office due to end on 30 September 2023.

Under Dr Bell’s leadership, the immediate priorities of the Board of Trustees and the Senior Executive Team will be to implement the Museum’s new Strategy 2030 and delivering on its commitments to the Welsh Government Programme for Government.

Statement from Dr Carol Bell: 

“Amgueddfa Cymru has an exciting year in prospect, during which we will concentrate on operationalising our new strategy and progressing important new initiatives that feature prominently in the Welsh Government Programme for Government, especially Amgueddfa’r Gogledd. I am delighted to be at the helm, albeit briefly, at this time of great change and opportunity for the museum.”

National Museum Cardiff displays newly conserved Manet painting

Amgueddfa Cymru - Museum Wales is today (Tuesday 17 January 2023) proud to exhibit a newly restored painting by Édouard Manet at National Museum Cardiff. 

The painting has been conserved by museum experts thanks to support from the TEFAF Museum Restoration Fund, Finnis Scott Foundation and the Friends of National Museum Wales.

Building work on the Vulcan Hotel enters a new phase

Building work on the Vulcan Hotel at St Fagans National Museum of History has entered a new phase. The scaffolding has recently been removed from the roof, and work will shortly begin on the interior of the building.
