AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Partnership (CDP) studentship
Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales / Swansea University
Swansea University and Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales are pleased to announce the availability of a fully funded studentship from October 2026 under the AHRC’s Collaborative Doctoral Partnership Scheme.
Amgueddfa Cymru and its Natural Sciences collections carry within them echoes of the British Empire, connected to the identities and locations of collectors and the sources of the wealth which facilitated their collecting. This PhD project will seek to develop a fuller understanding of the colonial histories of the Natural Sciences specimens held by Amgueddfa Cymru, and how to deal with these difficult legacies. The student will work with curators to identify the ‘echoes of empire’, and employ participatory heritage practices to engage with and (re)interpret them, seeking partnerships with Welsh diasporic or migrant communities/refugees to do so.
The AHRC award pays tuition fees up to the value of the full-time home UKRI rate for PhD degrees and full maintenance for all students. The National Minimum Doctoral Stipend for 2025/26 is £21,805 (rising in alignment with UKRI) plus a CDP maintenance payment of £600/year.
The successful student will be expected to spend time at both Swansea University and National Museum Cardiff.
The ability to speak Welsh is not required for this studentship. The student would not be employed as a member of staff at Amgueddfa Cymru.
Closing date: Applications must be submitted by 5pm BST on Friday 22 May.
