Fresh woad leaves will be picked and used straight from the National Wool Museum Dye Garden which is in Dre-fach Felindre, Llandysul, Carmarthenshire, SA44 5UP to make a light turquoise dye on silk and wool.
Learn how to make a dye in lovely shades of duck egg to teal from woad leaves by releasing the pre blue within them. When the cells are broken down this indican combines with oxygen to transform to blue. You will use various methods to dye wool and silk and also create designs on fabric using Tataki zome. Here the leaves are pounded onto fabric where the blue emerges to make shapes in various shades.
This fun, relaxed workshop is suitable for complete beginners. All equipment and materials and protective clothing will be supplied - please wear suitable clothing and closed shoes not sandals. You may also wish to bring a notebook and camera/phone.
Gloves (non-latex), aprons, and goggles will be provided. The workshop features wool, so please bear this in mind if you are allergic to wool/lanolin.
