Event:Guided Surface Tours

Big Pit National Coal Museum

Every year at Big Pit we carry out essential underground maintenance to ensure that we can continue to offer a world class experience for visitors to enjoy.

During the period when the underground tour is unavailable, our guides are on hand to offer unique guided tours of Big Pit’s surface, including Pit Top and various colliery buildings.

During the guided surface tour, our guides will explain the work that’s being carried out underground, the history of Big Pit as a working coal mine, contraband regulations and the role of women and children underground.

The tour will also visit the Lamproom, Winder House, Forge and Stables where our guides will share interesting facts and explain the important roles these buildings played in the efficient and safe running of  Big Pit.

The audio visual King Coal Mining Experience will be open, along with the Pit Head Baths Exhibition, Coffee Shop and new Gift Shop.

Pre-book a FREE surface tour HERE or ask upon arrival.
