Figure

HINE, Margaret (Hine often appears in studio pottery literature, most often in relation to a movement dubbed by Bernard Leach as the ‘Picasssettes’ - a group of potters working in tin-glaze in the 1950s that were stylistically influenced by Picasso’s ceramics. She trained at the Derby College of Art, Central School of Art in London and at London University. From 1949-54 she had a studio in Bayswater, London with William Newland and Nicholas Vergette and in 1954 moved to a new studio in Prestwood, Buckinghamshire.)

Figure of a goat, tin-glazed earthenware, of a stylized form with thick body, simple conical legs, stubby tail, head with open mouth, bulging eyes, large ears and long horns curving backwards; covered all over with a brown glaze mottled with white flecks and with a lustrous sheen, incised and wax resist decorative techniques reveal the white tin-glaze beneath the brown coat in a pattern of large segmented circles and thin stripes around the body and chest.
