Biscuit porcelain bust of a long-haired middle-aged man in armour, with a cravat at the neck above a chain and pendant medallion, on a pedestal in the form of a fluted column with a moulded spreading base.
Michiel Adriaanszoon de Ruyter (1607 - 1676), Dutch Admiral who sailed up the Medway to attack the English fleet at Chatham in 1667, and was mortally wounded in action against the French in 1676. After a posthumous portrait by Jan Mauritz Quinkhard (1688 - 1772) engraved by Jacobus Houbraken (1698 - 1780).
